Transferring in a domain
.co.uk, .org.uk domains
The process of .co.uk domains differs significantly from other contry specic or top level domains, this is because Nominet, the .uk registrar operate a different system.
Nominet agents (those who are members and can register domains via semi-automated systems) are each allocated a unique 'tag'. Ours is 'WISS'. A tag is used to associated domains to a Nominet agent and make it easy to manage domains.
To transfer a domain in to WISS all you need to do is ask the exisiting tag holder to release the tag for your domain to 'WISS'. Once you have done this let us know so we can be prepared for the transfer. Once your old tag holder has made the request the process is normally completed within a few minutes but sometimes you may have to wait 12 hours or longer for records to change globally.
How do i find out who my tag holder is?
- Go to Nominet's website.
- Type your domain name e.g. example.co.uk in the box labeled WHOIS and click 'Look up'
- Look down the 'Result of WHOIS query:' page and locate the Registrar entry it looks like:
Registrar:
WiSS Ltd [Tag = WISS]
URL: http://wiss.co.uk
The tag holder in this case is WISS.
Top level domains, .com, .net, .org etc
Transferring top level domains can get complicated, and finding out who your registrar is and the names of the people to contact can be problematic.
If you know who to contact then great, all we'll need is the domain transfer key, sometimes called the 'auth key'. If not, then please contact us and we can find out this information for you.
Once we have the transfer key we will initiate a transfer request, if it goes smoothly, after 5 days have elapsed the domain will transfer to our registrar Gandi. If you can't wait 5 days then you can ask your current registrar (or agent) to change the name server records for your domain to ns0.wiss.co.uk and ns1.wiss.co.uk. This will enable us to manage the domain records (do all the web site and email pointing) without having to wait for a domain name transfer. This is the quickest way, as we can perform the transfer at a later date and avoid the 5 day delay in getting your new website or email services up and running.
During the domain transfer process you may get an email from the current registrar asking your permission to release the domain, the email may be very long winded and difficult to interpret, if you have any difficulty understanding it, you can forward it to us to act on your behalf.
If you run into problems, please contact us and we will do our utmost to help.
